Lenders are leery about opening accounts for people with no credit history because they simply have nothing to base your reliability on.
So, if you can't build a credit history without credit and you can't get credit without a credit history, just what has a person to do? It's nearly impossible to rent a car, stay in a hotel, or shop online without a credit card, so let's explore a few of the options that can eliminate this Catch-22.
Available Credit Options
Although many of the major credit card companies won't give you a card without a credit history, some smaller ones, like department stores, will. Find a department store that will issue you a card and apply for it. You can try getting a gas station card also. Either way, use your card but be sure to make all payments on time. Your goal is to build a good credit history, not just get a credit card.
Find a credit card company that will review your overall financial situation and not just your credit history. Some lenders will look at your employment history, your housing situation, and how often you have moved. If this is all on the up and up, they may approve your application. Again, use this card wisely.
Credit Unions
If you are a credit union member, or are eligible for membership, see what their card issuing terms are. Although they are no giving out cards with their eyes closed, they will often have more relaxed conditions for members. You no longer have to work for a specific company to be eligible to join a credit union. So it's well worth checking if there's one in your area.
Secured Credit Cards
Secured credit cards are offered by lenders who will give you a line of credit that either matches, or is slightly higher than, a cash deposit that you give them to hold. As your experience with the card grows, these lenders will often raise your limit without requiring you to increase your deposit. Eventually, you can use your experience with this lender to apply for cards that are not secured.
Student Credit Cards
If you are a student, then you'll be best off with a student credit card. Student credit cards can be a great way of building the credit history that you will need to depend upon after graduation. The important thing here is to remember to use that opportunity wisely. Many banks will issue college students a credit card, especially banks that are located in college or university cities and towns.
When you do manage to get a credit card, remember that you are establishing a credit history. Show that you are a good financial risk by paying the bill on time. Don't go crazy with the spending. It will only cause you problems in the future.

| Have you ever really looked at your credit card and tried to figure out what that huge string of numbers really means? Do these card issuers have so many customers that your account number has to be 16 digits long?
You may be surprised to know that all those numbers you see actually do stand for something, and it's not just who YOU are. Let's take a look.
Most of the major credit card companies operate on the same system when choosing a credit card number. Other cards like gas cards, department store cards and phone cards go their own way. Let's concentrate on the ones that all play by the same rules.
The very first digit in the series will be a 3,4,5, 0r 6. This number designates the type of card as follows:
3 = a Travel & Entertainment Card like American Express or Diners Club.
4 = Visa and Visa-branded debit cards, cash cards, etc.
5 = MasterCard and MasterCard-branded debit cards, cash cards, etc.
6 = Discover
American Express and Diners Club use the second digit to identify the company. That means that Diners Club cards will start with either "36" or "38", and American Express cards will use either "34" or "37".
The remaining numbers in the series are used for different purposes depending upon the card type and issuer.
In most cases, the next group after the opening series of numbers represents the routing number of the card-issuing bank, the group after that is the user's account number, and the final digit is a check digit. The check digit is a number that is calculated by applying a special formula to all of the other numbers. The check digit is the result of that formula and is used as an anti-fraud check.
To keep things from getting too confusing, look at your card as you follow along for the next steps.
American Express
The American Express Card uses digits three and four for type (business or personal) and the currency of the cardholder's country of origin. The next digits from the fifth through the eleventh are account numbers. Digits twelve through fourteen indicate the card number within the account and the last digit is the check digit.
Visa
With Visa, digits two through six represent the bank number. Beginning with the seventh digit and running through the twelfth or the fifteenth represents the account number and the last number is the check digit. Since all Visa cards do not have the same amount of numbers in the sequence, the number of digits in a group may vary.
MasterCard
For MasterCard, the second digit, through to anywhere between the third and the sixth digit is the bank number. All remaining digits, except the check digit at the end of the series, identifies that cardholder's account.
Now that we've gone over it all, you're probably wondering why you were ever wondering in the first place. Just remember though, knowledge is power. Some things are just fun to know.

| Nationally recognized Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) authority Russell Barkley, Ph.D., has embarked on a national speaking tour to discuss the symptoms of ADHD in adults and the potentially serious consequences these symptoms may have on the life of an adult living with this disorder.
ADHD is believed to affect an estimated 8.1 percent of adults, or 9.2 million adults across the U.S. based on a retrospective survey of adults aged 18 to 44, projected to the full U.S. adult population. The purpose of this tour is to help raise awareness about the importance of identifying, diagnosing and treating adult ADHD.
In children, ADHD may interfere with paying attention in school, completing homework or making friends. Difficulties experienced in childhood may continue into adulthood. The symptoms of ADHD in adults may lead to potentially serious consequences. Surveys have shown that when compared with their non-ADHD peers, adults with ADHD may be:
- Three times more likely to be currently unemployed
- Two times more likely to have problems keeping friends
- Forty-seven percent more likely to have trouble saving money to pay bills
- Four times more likely to have contracted a sexually transmitted disease
"This educational initiative is meant to provide information about ADHD in adults including the results of recent studies of adults with ADHD concerning their symptoms, impairments and functionality in many domains of life that support the results of previous research in this area," said Dr. Barkley author of a recently published book, ADHD in Adults: What the Science Says.
Two studies, one conducted at the University of Massachusetts (the UMASS study) and one conducted at The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee (the Milwaukee study), were recently published in a book by Dr. Barkley. They were both designed to observe secondary outcomes of patients living with ADHD. These secondary outcomes included: educational and occupational functioning; drug use and anti-social behaviors; health, lifestyle, money management and driving; sex, dating, marriage, parenting and psychosocial adjustment of offspring; and neurological functioning. Observational outcomes showed that adults with ADHD, when compared to a control group, were more likely to use certain illicit drugs, engage in certain anti-social behavior, have financial problems and engage in risky sexual behavior. Outcomes of both studies were observed and documented through a combination of data gathering techniques, such as self-reporting, patient interviews and observation.
"These results, together with what we already know about ADHD, give the impression that ADHD has a potentially significant impact on the lives of many patients. There is hope for adults with ADHD. Today there are ways to manage this chronic condition, and I hope these findings serve as an impetus for adults with ADHD to seek medical advice from their healthcare providers," said Dr. Barkley.
The UMASS study, conducted from approximately 2003 to 2004, examined lifestyle outcomes among three cohorts of adult patients: 146 clinic-referred adults with ADHD, 97 adults seen at the same clinic who were not diagnosed with ADHD, and also a third general community sample of 109 adults without ADHD. Specifically, the UMASS study found that the adults with ADHD when compared to the non-ADHD control group were approximately three times more likely (21 percent compared to 6 percent) to sell drugs illegally. Additionally, the UMASS study found that 67 percent of adults with ADHD compared to the control group (15 percent) had trouble managing money.
The Milwaukee study, ongoing since 1977 (with the most recent follow-up conducted from 1999 to 2003), is an observational longitudinal study that looked at secondary lifestyle outcomes of 158 children who had been diagnosed with ADHD and, as adults, either continue to experience symptoms or no longer have the disorder at the age of 27, compared to a community control group of 81 children without ADHD who were followed concurrently. The Milwaukee study found that the adults with ADHD were approximately three times as likely when compared with the community control group to initiate physical fights (30 percent compared to 9 percent), destroy others property (31 percent compared to 8 percent) and break and enter (20 percent compared to 7 percent).
"As an organization dedicated to providing information and resources to adults with ADHD, we are excited to see such attention paid to this disorder," said Evelyn Polk-Green, MS, Ed., ADDA President-elect and adult living with ADHD. "The reason why these findings are so important is that they help to inform people that ADHD is not just a childhood disorder, but in fact, a disorder that may affect multiple aspects of adult life and should be properly diagnosed and treated. This research also reinforces the need for formalized and validated criteria for the diagnosis of adult ADHD and may play a significant role in the development of this diagnostic criteria and the addition of it to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders."

| In the wake of reports of high suicide rates among military veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Littleton acupuncturist Mark Costella offers help to the former troops before their stress spins out of control.
"I was having great success treating anxiety and stress," Costella said. "Then, I heard that veterans were not getting treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. I love to do what I can for any of the guys."
CBS News recently reported that between 1995 and 2007, almost 2,200 active-duty military personnel committed suicide.
Those between ages 20-24 who have served in the war on terror reportedly have higher rates, between 18.7 and 20.8 per 100,000 people in 2005. In contrast, nonveterans had a suicide rate of 9.4 per 100,000 people during that same time period.

He is one of many people in the United States who is taking the nontraditional treatment of acupuncture to veterans. He also offers his services to veterans at a nominal charge.
Acupuncturists Without Borders, a nonprofit organization of practitioners, has launched the Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Project, a program dedicated to providing free acupuncture treatments for veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, and other past conflicts and wars.
A pilot program is under way in Albuquerque, N.M., where founders hope to expand to other areas of the country, according to the group's Web site.
While Costella's offer is not as widespread, he is using the same basic ideas as Acupuncturists Without Borders.
"Acupuncture is based on meridians in bodies that are related to organs," Costella said. "Meridians get blocked through life. Stress tenses everything up. In a case of combat, you're doing that for 10 or 12 hours straight."
It was more than 5,000 years ago when the Chinese discovered that 12 acupuncture "meridians" carry subtle energy in the human body, according to http://tuberose.com/meridians. Costella places pins into specific points on the body that have been proven to be linked to ailments. The goal is to get the energy flowing through these meridians again.
That's the Eastern explanation, he said. The Western explanation is that the pin pricks lead to the release of endorphins.
The pins stay in for about 30-60 minutes, and John Rossie, a Vietnam veteran who is receiving treatment from Costella for joint pain, said he can't feel them.
"You just lay there and relax for the session," Rossie said. The results occur later. For Rossie, acupuncture led to a purging, making symptoms worse at first, a common temporary result. However, he told Costella to push through. Now, he said his pain, which usually comes and goes over time, is experiencing longer periods of recession.
That's the good news. The bad news is that besides Rossie and a few others, veterans aren't showing up.
"One of the stigmas to get past is these are young, healthy guys and gals, and there is a stigma associated in the military with admitting something is wrong," Costella said.
Rossie agreed. He thinks, however, that the newest generation of veterans is more likely to try acupuncture than his generation.
Many veterans receive their medical treatment from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals. The Veterans Affairs War-Related Illness and Injury Study Center in Washington, D.C., offers free acupuncture sessions to Iraq veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental health disorders.
Closer to the Front Range, Rossie said he has spoken with physical therapy and mental health counselors who work at the Denver location about the procedures.
"[They] were all receptive to the idea and said that anything that could be of help they would be behind," Rossie said.
